I went to view the East Side Gallery on Saturday. It’s the open air gallery painted on remnants of the the Berlin Wall and it stretches about a mile so it’s probably the largest gallery in the world. After the fall of the wall many local and international artists were invited to paint murals in this area. Their themes include escape and freedom and also there are a number of abstract works. In recent years there has been a growth of graffiti scrawled on these works and they have had be regenerated. Right now many of the works are being repainted and during this time there are protective barriers in front of them
It’s ironic that Berlin is protecting the wall now.
