Nein, vielleicht, ja (No, maybe, yes)

Normally in my experience, when you ask for something in Germany and they say ’Nein’ then they mean ‘No’ with no discussion, whereas in Ireland the way you ask the question and depending on the firmness of the reply, ‘No’ can be interpreted as ‘Maybe’, especially if you’re very polite about the request.

Well that's what happened yesterday at the Rocket tower building (built in 1999 as the GSW building) a newly refurbished iconic skyscraper on Rudi-Dutschke Strasse  (see linked photographs) where I was hoping to take photographs of Berlin from the top.

The security guy said ’Nein’ but when I persevered and asked him some further questions about the building, he eventually relented and got one of the builders, as the building interior is still being worked on, to bring me up in the service lift to the 21st floor where I had a great view across part of Berlin which I photographed. I guess persistence pays off sometimes, Ja?
